House Loring

General Information

The home of House Loring is the village of Loringhold, in the Westerlands. Loringhold is south of Lannisport and north of Crakenhall, on the Sunset Sea.

Sworn to Liege Lord Tywin Lannister.

History

The Rhoynar Invasion

Once Nymeria wed Mors Martell to secure a Rhoynar foothold in Dorne, the Rhoynar began eliminating the remaining regional lords in Dorne to establish a unified kingdom. Among the 10,000 Rhoynar who had come across the Narrow Sea was an infantry captain and former master of the hunt named Lor, who led his infantry across the southern shore of Dorne pressing westward. Lor’s men were responsible for the capture of self-styled Dornish King Alleryn Sandstone, who was then sent to the Wall, as well as the destruction of a number of other forts and garrisons. The rewards for his success resulted in the formation of what would eventually become House Loring.

Some centuries later, Mikel the Bold would lead his forces out of Dorne and through the Reach, along what would later become the Ocean Road. As he tore through the countryside, his host grew in number to tens of thousands, and Mikel pressed into the Westerlands to overthrow the King of the Rock. Before Mikel could reach Casterly Rock, however, he succumbed to wounds taken near what would later become Old Oak. His sons and forces dug through the rocky outcroppings of the Westerland hills to entomb Mikel’s remains. Many of the men who came north with Mikel would settle in the area, and upon the site of his burial was built the castle Greentalon.

Aegon’s Conquest

By the time Aegon the Conqueror came ashore in Westeros, Loringhold had developed into a bustling port town with a strong militaristic bend. They were host to a major fleet and, aside from Lannisport and Oldtown, the largest and busiest port along the Sunset Sea.

When King Loren called his banners to engage Aegon the Conqueror alongside King Mern of the reach, Hand Titus Loring II brought forth his band of one thousand mounted knights, four thousand infantry, and five hundred archers. They were among the 55,000 Rock and Reach troops present at the Field of Fire.

The Loringhold military made up a large portion of the initial charge which broke the Targaryen army under command of Lord Jon Mooton. However, when Aegon and his sisters released their three dragons on the field, one fourth of the Loringhold forces would be slain, including Titus Loring. However, Titus (and his archers) are credited with dealing a grievous wound to Visenya Targaryen while she flew on the back of the dragon Vhagar.

King Loren bent the knee to the Targaryens, and was then installed as Warden of the West. Lord Loren then placed the newly ascend Lord Jon Loring as his second-in-command, and House Loring grew to become the second most powerful house in the Westerlands, behind only House Lannister itself.

Blackfyre Rebellion

When Daemon Blackfyre made his claim to the throne, a number of Loringhold citizens dissatisfied with the rule of Aegon the Unworthy supported the legitimized bastard’s claim to the throne. In response, Liege Lord Damon Lannister sent forth forces from House Lefford to restore order. This resulted in a number of deaths of both Lorings and Leffords, and strained relations in the Westerlands.

After Ser Quentyn Ball slew Lord Lefford and defeated Lord Damon Lannister, his forces marched southwest and passed through Loringhold. Blackfyre supporters within Loringhold threw open the gates to Ser Quentyn Ball’s men and defected to the invading army. Many of the remaining Targaryen loyalists were slain.

By the time Ser Quentyn Ball departed, his forces had grown by thousands and Greentalon had been destroyed, leaving behind only a few hundred citizens of Loringhold.

The New Age

Lord Mikel Loring followed his Liege Lord Tywin Lannister into the Usurper’s War. After Rhaegar Targaryen fell to Robert Baratheon on the Trident, Mikel joined Tywin in the Sack of King’s Landing. This, in addition to Lord Mikel’s fathering of the bastard Dorian Hill, brought scandal to House Loring.

After Mikel’s death, House Loring earned great accolades at the Tournament of the King’s Hand Lord Eddard Stark, in which Lord Reginald Loring won the Grand Melee, and Ser Dorian Hill finished second in the Archery tournament. The success was marred by accusations of murder from fellow westermen, which was later proven false. These successes led to sweeping improvements to Loringhold and the resurrection of Greentalon.

The War of the Five Kings

House Loring successfully defended an attack by two western houses, suffering not a single casualty despite being outnumbered by 1300 men. House Loring would go on to crush 800 Northern cavalry under the command of House Glover in another flawless victory at the Golden Tooth.

Lord Reginald, Ser Dorian, and Enthin fought in the Battle of the Blackwater, slaying or capturing four lords and knights between them. The brothers played a critical role in holding King’s Landing against Lord Stannis Baratheon until the arrival of Hand Tywin Lannister and Lord Mace Tyrell. For his valor and prowess in battle, Ser Dorian was legitimized, becoming Ser Dorian Loring.

The Loring Family

Presently, the Loring household consists of:

Ser Dorian Hill, the Magpie, second-born son of Mikel Loring.
Enthin Loring, third-born son of Mikel Loring and Mellara Prestor.
Lady Allyria Loring, first-born daughter of Mikel Loring and Mellara Prestor
